Pet Therapy is an interaction between a person and a trained animal. The main idea for Pet Therapy is to help those with a mental disorder or health problem. Cats and dogs are the commonly used pets for Pet Therapy. They do use other pets, like horses, depending if they met the screening criteria.
Most of us have a personal relationship with animals. I know I do with my kitties. The goal with Pet Therapy is to bring in animals and have them interact with patients. These pets need to be obedience trained and can remain under control with excellent behavior. The pets are super social. They enjoy being touched, petted, and held if appropriate.
Patients who deal with post traumatic stress disorder, chemotherapy, regain motor skills and many more situations benefit tremendously from Pet Therapy. Pet Therapy helps decrease anxiety. It also helps self esteem, being able to interact with others, helps with motor skills and helping them to become more independent.
Although Pet Therapy is a beneficial treatment, there are some risks. Hygiene and sanitation is one of the biggest problems with safety being another huge risk. They do have to screen all pets for behavior and health to make sure everything is safe, but any injuries can happen unexpectedly. After a patient goes through Pet Therapy, they tend to be less anxious and improve levels of heart and vascular and nervous system functions.
Pet Therapy has positive results on the patient's. I think it’s phenomenal to watch animals and humans interact together. Maybe when I’m older, I will donates some of my felines from my cat farm to help this program.
